The unexpected treasure I found in my "little black book"

The unexpected treasure I found in my "little black book"

Devin McDermott

This morning, I opened up my "little black book."

Don't get excited – it's not what you're thinking.

It's an 8-inch by 5-inch, plain black-covered journal I've been keeping for a very specific purpose. One that contributes more to my growth than almost anything else I do, yet takes barely 90 minutes of my time each month.

See, every week and every month, I use this journal to reflect on how I did with my top 3 goals from the previous period, and then set my 3 main priorities for the next one.

Earlier, as I filled out the last page and began a fresh one, I took a moment to flip back through the entries in this "goal journal" and a couple others, too. I realized I had nearly 4 years of my weekly and monthly goals recorded.

What a story they tell.

I've dubbed this my "Master Habit" because it serves as a focusing agent. It keeps my mind constantly locked on progress. There were plenty of weeks where I fell short on my goals in the past 18 months. But that's not the point.

The point is that each week, and each month, I look back and ask: "Did I do it? If not, what can I do better?" Then I set my intentions for the next period.

When you do that consistently...

Every week.

Every month.

Every year...

There is literally no other possible outcome than trending in the right direction, regardless of how many times you hit specific targets or not.

And when you zoom out and look back over a longer period...

You may just find that your health is better than ever.

Your body is stronger than ever.

Your net worth is higher than ever.

You're more skilled than ever.

Your relationship is better than ever.

You're happier and more fulfilled than ever.

That's exactly the story my journal tells. Not that it was a straight shot with everything going perfectly, and I'm not trying to brag either. It's just cool to look back on the journey and appreciate how far I've come. There were plenty of ups and downs along the way – that's life. But the trajectory is undeniably upward.

When you're consistently reminded of what's important to you and what you're working towards, it's almost impossible not to make meaningful progress.

This is one of the reasons why having accountability with someone you trust is so powerful when you're trying to quit porn. Regular checkins keep your goals top of mind. You're constantly learning and course-correcting as needed.

And together, we make sure you actually quit. For good.

There's no magic involved here. Just consistency, reflection, and the willingness to keep moving forward even when things don't go perfectly.

What would your "little black book" say about you if you started one today? And what story would it tell in a year?

Would it reflect struggle with something you just haven't been able to beat, still being stuck in roughly the same place despite knowing you can do better deep down?

Or would it chronicle your journey of finally breaking out of the porn trap and reclaiming your time, energy, and potential? Of rebuilding your confidence and relationships? Of becoming the man you know you can be?

That's a story worth writing.
