Breaking escapism loops made simple
Devin McDermott
Stopping escapism is simple, actually.
There's a lot to it if you want to do it right, but I can break it down into just a few key areas.
One:
You've gotta identify what purpose a certain behavior is serving in your life and work on serving that purpose in a better way instead.
So if you're using a self-destructive or time-wasting habit to relax at the end of the day, and you'd rather not do that, it's important to understand that the purpose of that behavior for you is relaxation and blowing off some steam.
Then you can ask yourself "how can I relax and blow off some steam in a healthier way instead?"
Two:
You're probably using that habit as a source of escapism.
And the urge spikes when you're feeling stressed, sad, angry, overwhelmed, anxious, had a fight with your wife, or any of myriad number of stressors that are normal parts of being human.
To fix the escapism pattern, you'll have to learn how to face down and actively process whatever you're experiencing.
How to process and release those feelings in healthier ways instead.
Three:
You're probably rationalizing that behavior repeatedly.
"What's the big deal?"
"Just one time."
"I'll just do it a bit, no more."
"I'll stop tomorrow."
And all of these kinds of thoughts will keep you coming back for more forever.
Unless you consciously step in and challenge them, break them down and stop believing them.
Four:
It's critically important that you learn how to take control over your thoughts when an urge is coming up, so you can cut it off before it grows into something much harder to control.
It's simple.
But not easy.
And it helps a lot when you have support and a specific step-by-step, guided process to follow.
