It's not always going to feel good...
Devin McDermott
Real talk.
Growth can be painful.
Like the pain experienced by a child who's legs are growing.
The pain required to grow in the gym.
The pain required to truly advance your career into uncharted territory.
The pain of uncomfortable conversations with your wife.
... or the pain of admitting your own shortcomings, and working on fixing them.
The reframe we want to create is this:
Pain isn't to be avoided.
We should seek it out because it's a gift that signals growth is taking place.
In particular, this kind of "not actually damaging, just uncomfortable" pain.
Problem is, most humans just follow their primitive biological wiring to avoid pain and find pleasure, which in the modern world means avoiding growth and chasing stagnation through endless cheap dopamine. People numb themselves with whatever they can get their hands on... and in the modern world, there are a LOT of options. And it's truly no way to live for any man who cares about his growth.
Not all numbing agents are equal, though.
Some are more benign, like watching TV at night.
Some are much more harmful, like modern porn on high-speed internet. Because studies have shown that it releases similar levels of dopamine to hard drugs like cocaine, but without the drug, and without [directly, usually] spending a dime. What's more is that it taps right into man's most primal, biological wiring for reproduction. A combination of factors which makes this vice unlike any other in the modern world... incredibly more addictive, and incredibly more destructive than most guys realize.
Yet the erosion is slow, over the course of years.
So guys don't truly know how far they've fallen until they quit and regain the clarity of mind that's only possible with a healthy brain that isn't being assaulted by such destructive amounts of dopamine.
It's a crazy world we live in.
You can't just follow the path of least resistance and hope for good results.
It's on us to learn how to navigate this modern world effectively, with grace and discipline and self control, so that even when temptation lies around every corner we have the skills and internal strength to do what we know is good and right for ourselves and our loved ones.
If you've been struggling to quit porn on your own, maybe it's time to try something different.
I can help you quit and simply move on with your life in the next 60 days (instead of being in recovery forever).
