Living a top-shelf life
Devin McDermott
Living an unusually awesome life ain't that complicated.
It's mainly a factor of decision making, energy management, and habits.
Let's break it down:
Back when I was stuck in the porn trap, my decision-making was shot because my frontal cortex was shot. And that's the part of the brain that controls our higher-level thinking and decisions. I'd spend far too much time chronically online, just searching for and consuming entertainment of various sorts because my brain was simply burned out by my high-stimulation lifestyle.
And then, even when I *did *make a good decision, which happened often because growth has always been important to me even when I wasn't honoring it as well as I could have been...
I'd struggle to follow through.
I'd stop a bad habit, and start a better habit instead.
Do that for a little while, but then in the end, end up reverting back to old ways.
I was waking up every day tired still, even after 8 hours of sleep.
I thought that was normal for a while.
Until the day I realized that something simply wasn't right with me.
Once I learned about the damage porn does to the dopamine reward center, and how that was literally affecting every part of my life by damaging my cognitive processes, decision-making, motivation, and energy levels during every waking hour of my life (not simply while I was viewing!) I knew something had to change. So I began working on quitting.
And what happened next?
As my brain healed from the dopamine-trauma I'd been putting it through for years, my decision making naturally improved, and so did my energy levels. I started waking up feeling rested for the first time in years.
And with better energy levels and decision making?...
Following through on my decisions became infinitely easier than it had been.
Breaking other habits, and creating better ones, became much more natural for me and I was actually able to sustain them long-term... instead of staying caught in a start-and-stop cycle where my best intentions were constantly falling short in reality. And that has been nothing short of transformational. I'm a completely different man than I was when I quit 5 years ago. Better in literally every way. Physically, mentally, financially, intimately, socially... truly a different beast. An outcome earned through good decisions and consistency that I simply wasn't capable of while my brain was under attack from porn and an overstimulating lifestyle.
So here's the rub:
If you can make good decisions, and you have the mental clarity and energy necessary to follow through on those decisions, then you can change your habits and create the kind of intentional lifestyle that naturally leads to the outcomes you want in your relationship, your business, fitness, or whatever else you set your sights on.
But if your energy is fractured? If your mind is burned out? If you're in that start-and-stop cycle I was in?
It's like wearing a ball-and-chain on your ankle.
Sure, if you're strong, you'll still make progress.
But how much better could it be if you were walking freely?
Let's find out together.
