Big diff between vision + reality
Devin McDermott
There's a massive difference between knowing who you want to be and actually acting like that person.
I'd know.
I spent years having clarity around what I wanted for my finances, fitness, lifestyle, relationships, and family... but hardly honoring any of it fully.
I was still wasting my time and energy on parties.
I was often recovering from consuming booze or other substances.
I'd procrastinate indefinitely and get way too far behind on my work.
I was undermining every intimate opportunity and my entire perception of women by watching porn even just once a day.
... and it was actually pretty fun for a while.
Because I was numbing myself.
I was on the hedonistic treadmill chasing pleasure.
And I fookin' found it.
Problem was, and always will be, that after over-pursuing pleasure there's always a comedown that leaves you feeling worse than you did before indulging. A comedown that's cumulative in nature, so the more time we spend abusing our dopamine reward center with various vices, the stronger the consequences become, until eventually it stops being enjoyable and starts being kinda painful. Regret grows. Resentment rises. Self-berating and guilt start moving to the foreground.
But by that point we're so far in it that stopping is hard.
Because we feel so dysregulated, and yet the brain has become accustomed to using the thing that's causing the dysregulation as a form of self-soothing.
So it's a vicious loop.
Feel bad. Do the thing to cope. Feel worse. Do more things to cope. Feel worse. Do more.
You get the idea...
Anyways, until we forcibly break ourselves out of this pattern and start acting like the person we actually want to be.. sadly, that cycle can and often does literally last until someone leaves this mortal coil.
The good news is you can move in a better direction any time you want.
And it starts by giving those problem behaviors the kind of attention they deserve.
Starting with the worst offenders first.
Which, if porn is still a thing you do, would be porn. It's simply the #1 most damaging thing most guys are doing (because most guys aren't doing meth or cocaine, and those are some of the only things that release more dopamine...)
Meaning when you remove that, it'll "move the needle" more than almost any other change you could make.
And if you've been struggling to stop for a while, let's talk about how we can use the next 60 days to help you quit for good and never go back.
