Healing your conscious/unconscious split
Devin McDermott
There are 2 wolves inside of you…
One is dark, and one is –
Okay, just kidding; that's not the road we're going down in this one.
But there is an important dichotomy inside each of us.
One that, if you don't understand it, can keep you stuck repeating the same old tiresome, repetitive cycles for years, decades, or even until death… Which very many people actually do.
Gasp
I know.
🧠 The Willpower Trap
Learn why willpower alone fails in porn recovery and discover what actually works for creating lasting change.
So let's pull back the veil a bit:
They say that our conscious minds are just five percent of our consciousness, and that the other ninety-five percent is completely unconscious. Meaning that almost our entire being, our belief systems and behaviors and more are operating beneath the realm of conscious awareness. Almost like an organic supercomputer housed in each noggin… Which, as you may have guessed, means this part of us has a whole lot of power. In fact, it drives a massive amount of what happens in our lives.
And just like an actual computer, the subconscious is "programmed" a certain way.
But what happens when the subconscious programs that are running are misconfigured or unhelpful?
Thing is, usually your subconscious programming wasn't decided by you. It was decided by your childhood experiences, your family, your teachers, your coworkers, the news, and whatever other influences have been around you forever. Plus your own beliefs, observations, and more… whether they're helpful, or not.
And so often, there are some crossed wires in there.
It's possible, and actually very common, to have subconscious programming that completely goes against what your conscious mind says it wants.
For example:
The fat guy who says he wants to change his food habits, drop those pounds, and build a strong body in the gym but then proceeds to do absolutely none of it — or he gets started, but completely fails to follow through. Something in his unconscious mind wants to be fat still… wants to keep enjoying food without restriction… wants to keep feeling the feelings he gets from it.
I know, maybe an uncomfortable idea.
But so be it.
If you aren't the type who's willing to take absolute responsibility over your circumstances, good and bad, then this newsletter ain't for you anyways.
Another example:
The dismayed husband in a rocky marriage who wants to improve things with his wife. So he tries a little bit, starts some counseling, and makes some promises… then falls short, and goes right back to his old ways. Actually further compounding the damage due to the rollercoaster of broken promises…
Again, something in his unconscious is keeping him that way.
One last example:
The man who was first exposed to porn when he was in his teens. He never decided he would do it forever, but it sunk its roots in deep, and decades later as a full adult he hasn't been able to stop and can see how it's been detrimental to his confidence, his relationships, and so much else that he cares about deeply. So he decides, repeatedly, that enough is enough and he's going to quit. For good, and for real this time. But then he goes back to it time and time again…
For him, too, something in his subconscious mind is keeping him stuck.
Part of him wants to be in that situation.
Part of him is enjoying it, despite the obvious negative consequences.
And the way to fix it is by healing that "split"
between the conscious and the unconscious minds.
If you know what you're doing, you can consciously choose how to program your subconscious mind with the right ideas, beliefs, and behaviors and essentially, help it to finally be on the same page with your conscious mind's desires. So that your subconscious is supporting your conscious mind's goals instead of sabotaging them.
Something that can be accomplished a few different ways.
From affirmations to the right reading materials to purpose-crafted journal exercises that go deep "under the hood" to create lasting change in those dusty, dark, unfamiliar recesses of the mind that most people don't even know exists. And if affirmations ain't your thing, I feel you - don't worry, if you don't like one way of doing it, there's always another.
Anyways, no wonder most people struggle to get what they want!
This should give you some good stuff to go on already.
